According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, the FDA will deploy\u00a0\"Agentic AI\" capabilities<\/span>\u00a0for all employees to support more complex, multi-step workflows.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Agentic AI<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0refers to an advanced artificial intelligence system capable of achieving specific goals through planning, reasoning, and executing multi-step actions. These systems incorporate guidance mechanisms\u2014including human oversight\u2014to ensure reliable outcomes.<\/span>\u00a0This tool is entirely voluntary for FDA employees and is not mandatory.<\/span><\/section>\n

FDA Commissioner\u00a0\u00a0Marty Makary<\/span>\u00a0stated, \"We are working to expand the application of artificial intelligence to provide our reviewers, scientists, and researchers with the best tools.\u00a0This is a pivotal moment in the agency's history of modernizing with new technologies, and these new tools are expected to significantly enhance our ability to accelerate the delivery of therapies and treatments.\"<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In May of this year, the FDA deployed Elsa, a tool based on LLM (\u00a0Large Language Model<\/span>\u00a0). According to internal agency data, over 70% of employees voluntarily use the tool. Since its initial deployment,\u00a0various business teams have continuously driven iterative optimizations of Elsa to better integrate it into their specific workflows.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The deployment of\u00a0Agentic AI<\/span>\u00a0will enable FDA staff to further advance the use of AI to assist in handling more complex tasks, such as meeting management, premarket review, review and verification, postmarket surveillance, inspection and compliance, and administrative functions.<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of the deployment, the FDA is simultaneously launching a two-month \"Agentic AI Challenge\" for internal staff. Participating teams will build their own solutions based on the new capabilities and plan to showcase them at FDA Scientific Computing Day in January 2026.<\/span><\/span><\/section>\n

Jeremy Walsh, Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer at the FDA, stated:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe FDA\u2019s outstanding reviewers have always been creative and forward-thinking in deploying AI capabilities,\u00a0and Agentic AI will be an important tool for them to further streamline their workflows and enhance their ability to ensure the safety and effectiveness of regulated products.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the FDA, the AI \u200b\u200bmodel runs in a high-security GovCloud (the US government's dedicated cloud platform) environment. The system does not use employee input data or data submitted by regulated industries to train the model, ensuring that sensitive research and regulatory data processed by FDA staff is not used for secondary learning. The agency views this deployment as another important step in its multi-dimensional AI strategy, pushing for deeper integration of artificial intelligence into daily workflows and improving operational efficiency.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
