According to the Denvergazette on December 19\uff0cDenver Mayor Mike Johnston signed the bill, passed Monday by the Denver City Council, outlawing the sale and distribution of flavored tobacco and nicotine products within the City and County of Denver.<\/p>\n

The ban, which passed on a vote of 11 to 1, makes it illegal for any retail tobacco store to \u201csell, offer for sale, give, barter, deliver or furnish any flavored tobacco product or samples of such products.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnston indicated he would support the measure if it passed.<\/p>\n

In a statement after the vote, Councilmember Darrell Watson argued that the ban would \"save lives from intentionally addictive and dangerous products.\"<\/p>\n

\"I wished no one vaped,\" said District 2 Councilmember Kevin Flynn, who was the lone dissenting vote. \"But I acknowledge the right of adults age 21 and over to freely choose and to buy and to use a legal product.\"<\/p>\n

In a press statement, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, an advocacy organization working to reduce tobacco use, thanked Councilmembers Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez, Shontel Lewis and Darrell Watson for their support of the ordinance that demonstrates: \u201cDenver is ready to put the well-being of its youth and the entire community above the profits of the tobacco industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Opponents say that the overly broad flavor ban threatens small businesses, will cost jobs, cost the city lost sales tax revenues and increase crime in Denver neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

\u201cPersonally, for me, I\u2019m nervous,\u201d said Rae Drennan, who manages the Denver location of Mxyed Up Vape. \u201cI just transferred to this location, and 90% of my sales are vape products.\u201d<\/p>\n

Denver join Aspen, Boulder, Carbondale, Edgewater, Glenwood Springs, Golden, and Snowmass Village, all of which have adopted restrictions or bans on flavored tobacco products.<\/p>\n

The law will not take effect for 90 days to permit the Department of Public Health and Environment to educate businesses and encourage voluntary compliance. It won't be enforced until 2026, the city's health department said.<\/p>\n
