Currently, the tax burden on heated tobacco products is only 80 to 90 percent of that on traditional cigarettes. The government plans to align the tax rate on heated tobacco products with that of cigarettes starting in the fiscal year 2026. Beginning in 2027, the tax rates for both products will be gradually increased by approximately 1 yen per cigarette each year. It is expected that the adjustment process will be largely completed by the fiscal year 2028.<\/p>\n
